As a performer, she was recently seen in Sondheim on Sondheim at the FreeFall Theatre in a cast that included Ann Morrison (the original Mary in “Merrily We Roll Along”), and Kissy Simmons (Nala, “The Lion King,” on Broadway). She also loves classical music by angsty Germans, moonlighting as the frontman for a yacht rock cover band, serving on the leadership council for March Chorus NYC, and more.
Based on a narrative from the avant-garde writer Frank Wedekind, Lulu details the rise, fall, and violent death of a sexually adventurous dancer (murdered by Jack the Ripper, no less). It shocked readers by showing true love and romantic opportunism side by side, criticizing what Wedekind saw as the hypocritical bourgeois attitude towards sexuality at the time. The story has continued to resonate throughout the years, and the story’s place at the center of Metallica and Lou Reed’s controversial collaboration only speaks to its ability to both entice and polarize audiences.

That’s really what touring with your band is all about; the opportunity to get out there and do what you love in front of the people that love seeing it. It helps to know that when you arrive in a new city, there will already be a live music crowd ready to greet you with open arms. And some of the most vibrant, bustling music scenes — with great venues, great young bands, and audiences constantly looking for a good time out — exist in places with a few universities nearby.
You may have noticed by now how these sorts of structures really can be plug-and-play to some extent. The basic awkwardness of harmonics-based tuning systems has caused musicians a lot of confusion and irritation over the years. Depending on your starting pitch, some intervals can be perfectly in tune, but others can’t be. And the more harmonically complex you want your music to be, the worse the tuning issues are going to get.
If you look next to your volume bar, you’ll notice a picture of a metronome next to a “1,2,3,4.” Those numbers indicate a four-beat (one measure) count in before you’re meant to start playing, and the metronome is how you’ll control whether you hear the click or not.
Most importantly, become familiar with your internal dialogue. What are your thoughts? What are the phrases you tell yourself? Are they positive? Are they negative? Are they rational or irrational? Are they something along the lines of: “You suck Susan!” (I hope not)?
Vocals are the heart of almost every pop song. In fact, save for instrumental music, vocals should be the focal point of a song in any genre. Whenever listeners find themselves humming along to a song, it’s usually the top-line vocal melody they’re latching onto, so mixing that aspect of your song’s arrangement for ultimate clarity is of particular importance.
“Musica Ricercata” is a work consisting of 11 movements for solo piano, which make use of two notes in the first movement, three in the second, four in the third and so on, featuring the full chromatic scale in the last movement of the work. We will look at the first movement for its unusual and brave choice of using a single note for an entire composition (or as we’ll see, for all but the last four measures).
